General information

There will be two EVENING midterm exams and a university scheduled final exam. Most of the problems on the exams will be similar to the problems in the weekly homework and Canvas quizzes. The material covered by each exam is given by the suggested reading and homework.

You are allowed to bring one handwritten 8.5x11-inch sheet of paper (regular printer paper) to each exam on which you can put on both sides whatever material you wish from the course coverage (definitions, formulas, theorems, results, etc.) as an Exam Reference Sheet to be used during the exam.

With the exception of the Exam Reference Sheet, all exams for Math 19 this quarter are closed-book, closed-notes, with NO CALCULATORS or other electronic aids permitted. We keep the numbers reasonably simple on exams, so there is no need for a calculator. Individual exams will be neither curved nor scaled.

The evening midterm dates are given below; it is your responsibility to verify right now to you can attend these exams. Please fill out the Exam Conflict Form as soon as possible if you will not be able to attend one of the midterms. In any case, if you need to reschedule the exam you must do so no later than two weeks before the exam. The final exam cannot be rescheduled, per university policy.

You will have assigned seating for exams. The seating chart will be posted in the exam classroom on the day of the exam; you are responsible for arriving a few minutes early to find your seat before the exam starts. Failure to sit in your assigned seat will be considered a breach of the Stanford Honor Code and be handled accordingly.

If an emergency occurs and you need to miss an exam, contact your instructor as soon as possible.

Regrade policy

There is a regrade process after each midterm exam to address possible grading issues on individual problems. You must submit your request in writing (through the Gradescope system), clearly explaining why the particular problem merited more points. You DO NOT need to supplement your writeup with emailed images of your exam -- we can access your complete exam in Gradescope. Your request must be submitted no later than:

  • Thursday, February 8 by 11:59pm for the first midterm
  • Thursday, February 29 by 11:59pm for the second midterm
  • Sunday, March 24 by 11:59pm for the final exam

NOTE: Once submitted, any part of the exam may be regraded.

The submission deadlines are firm, and no exceptions will be made, so look over your exam in a timely manner.

Office of Accessible Education Accommodations

Stanford is committed to providing equal educational opportunities for disabled students. Disabled students are a valued and essential part of the Stanford community. We welcome you to our class.

If you experience disability, please register with the Office of Accessible Education (OAE). Professional staff will evaluate your needs, support appropriate and reasonable accommodations, and prepare an Academic Accommodation Letter for faculty. To get started, or to re-initiate services, please visit oae.stanford.edu.

If you already have an Academic Accommodation Letter, please use this form to upload it and detail the specific accommodations you will need in this course. Letters are preferred by the end of week 2, and at least two weeks in advance of any exam, so we may partner with you and OAE to identify any barriers to access and inclusion that might be encountered in your experience of this course. New accommodation letters, or revised letters, are welcome throughout the quarter; please note that there may be constraints in fulfilling last-minute requests.

Student Athletes

If you are involved in a sport which may require you to travel this quarter, and especially if you will miss either of the midterms, please fill out the exam conflict form as soon as possible so that appropriate accommodations can be made. If you do not let the instructor know at least two weeks in advance of a missed exam, you may be denied the opportunity to take it at an alternate time or on the road. You are also responsible for homework while traveling. See the homework for information about turning in homework.
